GR-AIN: Component 1 Task 3

2009 Meritorious Achievement Award

Based on the research your team has done, explain how the NCT application chosen has advanced scientific knowledge.

The NCT application that we chose, Gr-ain Water systems, incorporates the ideas of a gray water recycling system and the idea a rainwater recycling system. The water that is collected in areas such as showers and the like travels through a system of pipes into a treatment station, where it is chemically treated and pumped back into the house through another system of pipes. The water that is pumped back into the house can be used for processes such as toilet water and watering gardens, so that regular water does not have to be used in its stead. Based on the research done, the NCT project chosen has advanced scientific knowledge in that it incorporates something new into the mix. Originally, water recycling systems only recycled grey water, water that is used by the average person in a house, or rain water. However, this new system combines the two previous systems, making water recycling systems more efficient and effective. In almost all houses in America, the rain that goes into a house’s, goes through the gutters, and into the ground. The new water system will have the water go into the gutters and then go through a system of pipes into a filter, where it can be recycled and reused. This new system combines the systems of recycling grey water and rain water in order to create an extremely effective and efficient water recycling system. It is imperative that a system like this come into existence and become widespread, because one of human’s major necessities is water, and the amount of fresh water available for humans to consume is decreasing drastically.
