Winner of Don Bosco Prep Young Artists' Scholarship Competition is Selected
April 25, 2012 - Eleven finalists of the 2012 Young Artists’ Scholarship Competition performed for the final concert of Don Bosco Prep’s 2011-2012 Chapel Concert season on Saturday, April 21 at 7:30PM, 2012. Elbert Gong was selected as the winner of a $1,000 monetary award. Elbert is a freshman at the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, NJ. He started studying piano at age 4 with Mr. Michael Jacobsen at the Westminster Conservatory in Princeton. Since September 2008, he has been attending the Juilliard School Pre-college Division under the tutelage of Mr. Julian Martin. He was also the winner of the Juilliard Precollege Bachauer Competition in 2010 and the 2nd place winner of the Monmouth Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Concerto Competition in 2011. In 2010, Elbert took the 1st place in the Princeton Festival Piano Competition in junior artist division and the Richard L. Tang Yuk Award -- the grand prize for the whole competition. In addition, he was the winner of the 2010 Goldblatt Scholarship Competition. Elbert has performed many solo recitals in venues such as Paul Hall of the Juilliard School, Williamson Hall and Bristol Chapel of the Westminster Conservatory, Woodstock New York, and at local senior centers and assisted living centers. Besides piano, Elbert also acted in his school's Shakespeare production, plays tennis in his school team, and receives High Honors for his superior scholastic achievement at Lawrenceville.
Other finalists in the competition included Don Bosco Prep Singer/Pianist Timothy Gysin of Waldwick, Pianist Sara Lee, Don Bosco Prep Baritone William Martorano of Washington Township, Violinist Kathryn Chamberlain, Tenor Danny Smith, Soprano Kristina Walz, Don Bosco Prep Composer/Pianist Corey Meyer of Totowa, Soprano Gillian Lacey, Pianist Elise Xue and Baritone Jarred Lee. Judged by a panel of experts on talent, technique, musicianship, skill, interpretation, presentation, presence, the competitors competed against a standard of excellence. Judges included Gaetano Cecere, Don Bosco Prep’s Band Director; Toni Bilotti Cecere, Don Bosco Prep’s Choral and Concert Director; Kristin Dabaghian, Music Director, St. John the Baptist, Hillsdale, and concert organist; Jessica Davila, Hackensack Music Teacher; Garah Landes, composer, pianist and arranger; and Gay Willis, Broadway actor.
This is the second year for Don Bosco Prep’s Young Artists’ Scholarship Competition, established to celebrate, recognize and reward the talent, commitment and discipline of young performers. The competition is open to high school artists throughout the State of New Jersey.
