Today, Don Bosco Prep honored Major Thomas E. Kennedy, killed in action on August 8, 2012 in Kunar Province in Afghanistan, and all of the Don Bosco Prep alumni who were killed in action, by dedicating the Major Thomas Kennedy Memorial Park, which lies adjacent to DeSales Hall. The ceremony began with words of welcome from Lt. Colonel John Nawoichyk, P ‘18 who served with Major Kennedy. The ceremony featured a greeting and opening prayer from Fr. James Heuser, SDB, our Director/President as well as reflections from Mr. James Fortescue ‘91 (Board of Trustees) and Mr. Gregory Toskos ‘94 (Varsity hockey coach), both close friends of Major Kennedy and his family, and Mr. Paul Burke ‘92, Kennedy’s cousin.
Senior Grant Nawoichyk, who is entering the US Military Academy in the fall, gave a beautiful tribute to his longtime family friend. Kevin Brennan ‘18, who is entering the US Naval Academy, and Christian LoBiondo ‘18, who is entering the US Air Force Academy, made a presentation to the Kennedy family, and Ian Hamilton ‘20 whose Eagle Scout project was part of the Kennedy memorial, recited the Scripture reading. The DBP Chorus and Jazz Band gave beautiful renditions of the National Anthem, “Tell My Father,” and “The Army Goes Rolling Along.”
The ceremony concluded with Kennedy’s two children cutting the ribbon to the memorial. It was a beautiful tribute to a true hero.
