National Honor Society

Don Bosco Prep’s various honor societies are dedicated to recognizing our students’ academic achievements, and our school community benefits from the talents that honor society members share with their classmates as peer tutors.  Information about membership eligibility and the application process for each honor society is available in the links below.

National Honor Society Qualifications

The minimum academic qualifications for the National Honor Society at Don Bosco Preparatory shall be a weighted cumulative average of 93.000 for juniors and 90.000 for seniors. Students who meet these qualifications and have attended Don Bosco Prep for at least one year shall be considered candidates.

In the fall, each candidate will receive an information form on which to describe his qualities of scholarship, leadership, service and character. A committee of five faculty members appointed by the Principal will review the information forms as well as any additional comments from faculty members. The committee shall recommend membership for those 
candidates who demonstrate a superior degree of leadership and service in student government, clubs, sports and other activities and who uphold the principles of morality, respect, ethics and truthfulness. 

Membership shall be offered to candidates who are recommended by the faculty committee and approved by the Principal. Candidates become members by attending a suitable induction ceremony. The Principal shall receive appeals in the cases of non-selections of candidates, and in the disciplining or dismissal of members.

Ineligible Applicants:

Students may be denied acceptance into NHS for the following reasons:

  • Handing in an application after the designated deadline
  • Omitting sections of the application
  • Missing required recommendations and signatures
  • Violating school policy
  • Suspensions
  • Academic Dishonesty
  • issues and detentions pertaining to disrespect toward a teacher or student
  • Any fraudulent information included in or used to complete the application
  • Not properly following guidelines set forth on the application

Leadership

The student who exercises leadership:

  • Is resourceful in solving new problems, applying principles, and making suggestions.
  • Demonstrates initiative in promoting school activities.
  • Exercises influence on peers in upholding school ideals.
  • Is able to delegate responsibilities.
  • Exemplifies positive attitude and inspires positive behavior in others.
  • Demonstrates academic initiative.Successfully holds school offices or positions of responsibility.
  • Demonstrates reliability and dependability.
  • Is a forerunner in the classroom, at work, and in school or community activities.

Service

This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or their community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous and enthusiastic spirit.

The level and duration of service will be evaluated by the selection committee. It is important for the applicant to write all relevant info
rmation pertaining to service.

The committee cannot accept additional information 
or anything erroneously omitted after a decision has been made, as stated in the policy of the National Honor Society. It is very important that you include all service completed.

Character

The student who exemplifies character:

  • Is honest
  • Shows good morals
  • Has good ethics
  • Is courteous
  • Shows genuine concern for others
  • Is respectful toward teachers, staff and students
