ROBOTICS TEAM SUCCESS

Varsity Robotics are Finalists in Competition
The Don Bosco Prep Ironmen Varsity Robotics Team earned a trophy for being a member of the finalist (second place) alliance at the Midknight Mayhem off-season robotics competition in Plainsboro, New Jersey on June 22. Thirty-three FIRST Robotics Competition teams from three states participated. The Junior Varsity team also participated, but its alliance lost in the quarterfinals. The robotics teams use off-season competitions to try out team members in new positions after the seniors have graduated as well as to try-out new technology.  All of the team members who drove or operated their robots were new to their positions.

The teams were also trying out a new rack-and-pinion gear bracket that team members had designed and 3D printed. The brackets were designed to solve a problem that the teams encountered during the season when the rack and pinion gears separated under high torque. The team’s high-strength, industrial 3D printer was made possible by a donation from the Lovisolo family.  Students learn to design robot parts using industry-standard Solidworks software in the Robotics Design course which is part of DBP’s Engineering Pathway. Team members from left to right: Fr. Lou Konopelski, SDB, mentor, Niall Moloney, Aidan Bele, Robert Plastina, Ethan Joseph, Joseph Alcide, James Feehan, Nicholas Arteaga, Emerson Shatouhy, Christopher Vella and Vincent Massa
