A Message From The Administration

“To remain silent when you see something wrong which you can correct and do something about is to make oneself an accomplice in evil.” St. John Bosco

The tragic events of recent weeks in our nation make us weep. We join our voices with those of so many others – against the tragic death of George Floyd, against the ensuing violence in so many cities, against the scourge of racism that persists within our country, and against the divisiveness sown by some to drive our country further apart.

We recognize the majority of those in law enforcement live their calling as a true service of the common good and the protection of human life. We greatly respect them and are grateful to them. But the eight-minute video seen by millions around the world has grievously wounded trust in government, the law and the legal system. And reinforced the need for change.

We recognize, however, that change begins within our own hearts. This is a time not only for peaceful protest against something outside us, but for searingly honest self-examination. How does the sin of racism live within us? How does it show itself within our school community? How does it wound the “brotherhood” and “family spirit” that we profess to live?

These are not new questions for the Don Bosco Prep Community. We have been asking them for several years now. While many experience Don Bosco Prep to be a home with genuine love, we have also recognized that the Christian ideals of openness to all, mutual acceptance, and respect for the dignity of every human being remain a work in progress.

In particular, two initiatives of the past year – No Place For Hate and Unity Moving Forward – have been exemplary attempts by students and educators to grapple with the reality of racism in our midst, and to build pathways toward fuller equality and healing. We will continue with these two initiatives, and yet still do more, listening openly to the voices of our students, parents, faculty, and alumni. Discussion forums with students by grade level taking place in these days are the first step.

May we as a school community – students, parents, educators, alumni, Salesians and friends – be motivated at this time by the words of St. John Bosco: Because it is a beautiful thing for people to live together … we must love each other, help each other, esteem each other and suffer together.”
