Today Don Bosco Prep partnered with Jersey Cares for the third consecutive year for a day of service at DBP involving freshmen and sophomores.
Jersey Cares is a 25-year-old non-profit organization with a mission to make volunteering fun, easy and meaningful and they were able to bring this philosophy onto Don Bosco Prep’s campus this morning!
Jenny Lewellen, Senior Manager of Service Events, has been with Jersey Cares for almost three years. She started in the Corporate Service Program as an assistant and moved into Service Events shortly after and eventually contacted Theology Teacher, Mr. John Darcey P’18, who helped get this program rolling. Ms. Lewellen, along with eight other Jersey Cares representatives, were on campus today working with the DBP Students.
“This opportunity is for freshmen and sophomores and is a great way for the boys to provide a service to people that are less fortunate than they are,” said Mr. Darcey. “Sometimes, these younger guys aren’t really aware yet that there are people who are not as well off as we are so it’s a great way to show them that.”
The boys worked on five different projects throughout the day. They made Giggle Bags which were drawstring bags filled with items designed to comfort kids in hospitals recovering from various ailments, Healthy Habit Kits, containing various fitness items and recipe books, as well as Make Your Own Puppet Kits and Garden Kit Boxes for the Boys and Girls Club in Newark. Students even made scarves and no-sew fleece blankets for those in need.
All students who participated received an hour of community service. Thank you Jersey Cares for coming to campus today and helping to enrich our students!
