Music

Performing Arts offers students opportunities to learn from and perform with world-class musicians through academic electives, as well as outside of the curriculum. Challenging literature is taught and students reach a high level of proficiency. Students perform throughout the year at events including our Christmas Concert, Fine and Performing Arts Spring Showcase, liturgies, youth Christmas party, Back-to-School Night, and Open Houses.

Theatre Arts

As early as 1891, St. John Bosco, the school’s patron, outlined the benefits of theater in the educative process. “The aim of theater is to cheer, to educate, and to instruct morally.” Fr. John Barberis, a close collaborator on Don Bosco, summed up the Salesian view saying that theater enriches the intellect, culture, and practical prudence in everyday life. The theater program at Bosco encourages and welcomes students, parents, and staff to get involved. Whether it is on stage or behind the scenes, our award-winning productions are truly a family event!

Media Arts

Media Arts prepares students to organize and manage various aspects of the visual and performing arts, and entertainment media industries.  Don Bosco Prep’s media arts programs, under the direction of Jenna Vrablic, include instruction in sound engineering, broadcasting (both on-air and behind the camera), set design, script writing, editing, producing, and all three stages of production.  In addition to classes during the academic year, the Media Department offers a summer intensive over 8 days during which students, sitting side by side with professionals in the industry, learn how to create and brand their own production company, and develop a creative product that is presented at an official viewing party.

Chapel Concerts

Entering its 13th Season, Chapel Concerts is a series bringing world-class, local and young talent to Don Bosco Prep with the goals of championing the arts and enriching the cultural lives of our students and the community.   Historic Mary Help of Christians Chapel, with its superb acoustics and distinct interior, provides an intimate setting for memorable musical experiences. Don Bosco Prep students have had the opportunity to learn from and make music with world class performers, such as The Juilliard Trombone Choir, under the direction of New York Philharmonic Principal Trombonist Joseph Alessi; the Rutgers University Glee Club, under the direction of Dr. Patrick Gardner; the Pro Arte Chorale; among many others.

Visual Arts

Our Art Pathway begins with many of the traditional fine arts including drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, as well as graphic design and introduces the Elements of Art and Principles of Design (Intro to Art and Studio I). Students may then choose between Studio II 2D or Studio II 3D. Studio III AP Art is the final course offered Senior year. Students who excel in Intro to Art may skip Studio I. All classes are primarily project-based rather than lecture-based because it is significant that our boys have time to learn with their hands, not just their heads. We also want them to learn how to see, not just how to look at what is in front of them.
