PHOTOGRAPHY GUIDELINES

Photography adds an emotional element to the Don Bosco brand.
Although our words are powerful, photos provide “the proof in the pudding,” so to speak. For this reason, photography should be VERY carefully selected to match our messaging, and it should always feel authentically Bosco.

Moving forward, our photo language consists of four categories: in the moment, student interaction, sense of place and attention to detail.
I. IN THE MOMENT
Portray students in their natural environments as they live out the Bosco experience. For greatest impact, photos should be cropped to highlight the subject you want your audience to focus on.

  • Students working in class
  • Students at athletic practices/training
  • Students working on media/arts projects
  • Students volunteering/doing community service
II. STUDENT INTERACTIONS
Students and faculty are more than just kids at a desk and teachers at a smart board. We want to highlight collaboration and engagement. Capture engaged, genuine expressions, and keep it natural – not posed.
When photographing a group, compose the shot so that one individual is the focus.
III. SENSE OF PLACE
Capture the campus atmosphere of our school by focusing on wide open spaces and people interacting with their environment, specifically amongst the scenic areas on campus.
  • Students walking through campus pathways
  • Students sitting together in common areas
  • Students by the pond
  • Students on athletic fields/stands
IV. ATTENTION TO DETAIL
Capture the beautiful architectural and environmental details unique to Bosco, and document details of students and staff with their respective tools, supplies and equipment.
  • Blooming trees on campus (changing seasons)
  • Religious statues, symbols and elements
  • Details of student projects
  • Details of student work on paper
  • Details of athletic equipment
BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY
Black and white photography is not only timeless, it’s the best choice when you want to evoke an emotional response. Black and white photography strips away distractions and brings a reality to its subjects, and focuses on communicating a message or truth. Moving forward we will punctuate significant moments with carefully selected black and white images in social media posts, brochures and communications.
